Product Description
The MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Surface Reflectance products are computed from bands 1-7 to provide an estimate of the surface spectral reflectance for each band as it would be measured at ground level in the absence of atmospheric scattering or absorption. A correction scheme identifies atmospheric gases, aerosols, and thin cirrus clouds.
The MODIS/Aqua Surface Reflectance Daily L2G Global 250m SIN Grid product, MYD09GQK, contains data for the two MODIS bands with native 250m spatial resolution (bands 1-2). The best observations during a 24-hour period, as determined by overall pixel quality and observational coverage, are matched geographically according to corresponding 250m Pointer Files (MYDPTQKM). Quality information for the MYD09GQK product is provided at three different levels of detail: for individual pixels, for each band and each resolution, and for the whole file.
The MYD09GQK images shown are false-color RGB combinations using bands 2-1-1 (band 2: 841-876 nm, band 1: 620-670 nm). The data were acquired on February 13, 2004 over the Arabian Peninsula at the crux of the Red and Arabian Seas. The top right image includes all of tile h22v07, and the bottom right includes only a subset of a prevalent agricultural area in the uppermost portion of the tile. These irrigation circles in southern Saudi Arabia sit at the foot of the Jabal al Hijaz, spreading towards open desert. A land/sea mask has been used to remove deep ocean water, which appears black in the image. Level-2G surface reflectance data are input for the generation of several land products: 8-day Surface Reflectance, Vegetation Indices (VIs), Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF), thermal anomaly, snow/ice, and Fraction of Photosynthetically Active Radiation/Leaf Area Index (FPAR/LAI).
NOTE: These products are provisional, meaning that product quality may not be optimal. Incremental product improvements are still occurring, and users are urged to contact MODIS Science Team representatives prior to use of the data in publications. These data are likely to be replaced when the validated product becomes available.
