Product Description
The image shown above is an example of the MODIS/Terra Thermal Anomalies/Fire 8-day level-3 global 1-kilometer gridded product in the Integerized Sinusoidal projection (MOD14A2). The image was produced along the coast of Angola and Namibia and has been pseudo-colored for illustrative purposes:
Red = Fire
Blue = water
White = cloud
Green = non-fire land pixels
Black = missing data
Yellow = unknown
The MOD14A2 product is a gridded 1 km composite of the most-confident fire pixel detected in each grid cell over the eight-day composite interval. Fire detection is performed using the MODIS 4 and 11 micrometer channel brightness temperatures. The fire detection strategy is based on absolute detection of the fire, if the fire is strong enough, and on detection relative to the background to account for variability of the surface temperature and reflection by sunlight
